D'Arcy Kavanagh
Vocals, guitar, bodhran, bones

D'Arcy has had a lifelong love affair with Celtic music. When he was a lad growing up in Montreal, Quebec, D'Arcy often searched for the latest release from a Celtic band, while his friends were busy hunting for the last recordings from popular rock groups. His affection for the music of Ireland, Scotland and Canada's Atlantic provinces grew when he visited those areas as a young man, often adding a few singalong vocals for bands playing in pubs.
When he bought a guitar, he soon was learning traditional tunes, some familiar and some unknown to most of his friends. Occasionally, at a gathering of chums, he would haul out his guitar and offer a few of his favourite Celtic ditties. More than a few times, a few tunes would lead into a full session of music.
D'Arcy, who lived in several cities before arriving in Lethbridge, Alberta in 1978, started performing before senior citizen groups in southern Alberta in the early 1980s. Most of the time, he played old classics. Sometimes, though, he'd play an Irish, Scottish or Maritime tune to increase the energy level.
After almost 20 years of playing for seniors, D'Arcy started jamming with Ian Hepher in 1998. Soon, they were joined by a couple of other musicians in search of a band. When the group wondered what direction they should pursue, the answer became obvious - Celtic.
Since then, Glencoulee has been active, playing locally and touring Alberta and British Columbia. While the group has changed personnel over the years, D'Arcy has been a constant, singing lead vocals, and playing rhythm guitar, the bodhran and the bones.
A lifelong traveler, D'Arcy often gets to Ireland and Scotland where he usually immerses himself in the local music scene. More than once, he's returned home with a new instrument. On his last trip to County Clare in Ireland, he came back with a triple-skin Brendan White bodhran.
"It doesn't matter where we play, whether it's before 50 people or 1,000, the energy that comes from producing lively Celtic music is great, great fun," D'Arcy says.
